Kuwala Clean Energy

About Us

No family left in the dark

Our Story

Guiding Principles For A Sustainable future

Kuwala Clean Energy was founded with a simple but powerful vision: a Malawi where no family is left in the dark. Working in health centers in rural Malawi, our founder experienced firsthand the daily struggles caused by lack of access to reliable electricity: dim kerosene lamps, unsafe candles, and missed opportunities for study, work, and safety after sunset. A lot of people were also presenting to the health centers with respiratory problems such as asthma caused by reliance of these unsafe energy sources.

Motivated by a deep desire to solve this challenge, we launched Kuwala Clean Energy to deliver affordable, clean, and sustainable solar energy to off-grid households. Our journey began with our founder participating in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) where he refined the Kuwala pitch through the support and mentorship offered by the program.  Then with the support of the Mastercard Foundation through the Anzisha Prize the FAST (Fund for Alumni Start-ups in Transition), where we tested our first Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Today, we are implementing a full pilot in Havara Village with support from D-Prize, aiming to distribute solar lanterns to hundreds of homes.

who We Serve

We serve off-grid rural communities across Malawi, starting with Zomba District. Our model prioritizes women-led households, youth, and low-income families, ensuring that clean energy reaches those who need it most. By working through local Water Point Committees, we ensure trusted, community-led distribution and support.

Our vision

A Malawi where every household, regardless of location or income, has access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy

Our Mission

To uplift off-grid communities in Malawi with clean energy for healthier, safer lives.

Our Solution

Lighting Up Lives with Clean Energy

Approximately 18,000,000 people in Malawi still lives without access to electricity with over 94% in rural communities. These families rely on kerosene, candles, or firewood for lighting, which are unsafe, expensive, and harmful to both health and the environment. This energy gap limits children’s ability to study, increases health risks, and stifles economic opportunity. It is our mission to help these families gain access to affordable and clean sources of energy.
